Service Dogs for Diabetics
Taking advantage of dogs' superior sniffing abilities, service dogs are being trained to help people who have Type 1 diabetes. For diabetics, low blood glucose can be life-threatening. Dogs can be trained to smell the chemical change that takes in the body just before the blood glucose drops. For diabetics who cannot sense this change in themselves (hypoglycemia unawareness), a dog can literally be a life saver. Heaven Scent Paws trains dogs and provides a three-week training class for the diabetics who will receive the dogs. Other organizations that train dogs for this purpose include: All Purpose Canines and Dogs 4 Diabetics.
